1. What is an e-bike?

An Electric motorbike is similar to normal bikes but differs in some respects, such as having an electric motor for greater mobility. A heavier body also increases the load-carrying capacity to approximately 400 pounds and the speed can range, but it can be up to 40km – 90km per hour.

This contrasts a manual bike which we can ride up to 6 – 8km per hour. The functionality of an Electric bike is similar to hybrid vehicles that have become popular on the roads in the previous decade. They operate using an electric motor that combines the battery
with a source of electricity but can be driven manually if required for the purpose of exercise.

2. Who are electric bikes for?

Motorized bikes are a great option for people who like to travel at high speeds or for those who can’t ride normal bikes due to physical limitations. Note that the minimum age for riding an electric bicycle is 14 to 16 years old. Moreover, electric motor bikes have a wide range of uses depending on your needs:
a) Commute – Many individuals who live within the city, travel less than 15km for work and face heavy roadside congestion, can use a lightweight Electric bike which can go at a moderate speed and also help them get to work without being stuck in traffic
b) Errands – Numerous studies have indicated that a significant portion of vehicle usage is errands within a 10km radius of the house. Lightweight motorized bikes have become popularized as forms of transportation that reduce pollution, save on fuel and provide a light form of exercise to maintain cardiovascular health
c) Leisure – The high speeds of electric bikes gives them the perfect opportunity for adrenaline seekers who want to take them to various bike paths for high speed, thrill and a sense of getting away from the city.

3. Are e-bikes allowed in bike lanes?

Laws regarding the use of e-bikes in bike lanes differ from country to country. For example, in US states like California, electric motorbikes are allowed in bike lanes as long as they ride at a maximum speed of 20 mph. By contrast, there are some 22 countries where e-bikes are classified as mopeds and are not allowed in bike lanes. In Canada, E bikes are allowed in bike lanes as long as they don’t exceed 32km and do not have an output that is above 500W.

4. Which e-bike should I buy?

There are various e-bikes available in most countries, so you can select one according to your desired shape, color, utility options, and price. At Epic Cycles we can recommend our S2 Stromer bikes, Sur Ron electric bikes, Magnum Bikes or even our electric scooter for those who prefer a scoot or a bike.

However, bear in mind that the price will range from starting at around $500 and with advanced features such as mountain climbing are relatively expensive and can be bought for around $9500. As a rule of thumb, a good quality e-bike in the normal range can be found for $2000.

5. How far can an e-bike travel on a single charge?

An electric motorbike’s travel time mostly depends on its type and battery. With most electric bikes, the amount of pedal assistance that the rider gives greatly affects the battery life. Road conditions and the weight being carried also determine how long the battery will last.

The average distance on a single charge is 25-45 km, but on some higher end models, it can exceed 60 kms.

The important point to consider is that most people use electric motorbikes for commuting to work, errands and leisure which are all activities that fall under the minimum distance of a bike of 25km. Therefore, there should not have the fear of running out of battery during your trip.

6. How is the battery charged and when does it need to be replaced?

To charge your electric motorbike battery, you’ll need to remove it and plug it into a regular socket for 3-5 hours. The battery life of your e-bike can be extended by keeping it in a cool, dry environment while charging it or keeping it in a storage place when not in use. If you need to replace the battery, it will only cost $500-1000. Keep in mind that many e-bike companies provide a warranty on their e-bikes, for example, Bosch provides a 2-year warranty.

7. Can I convert my bike into an e-bike?
