Can You Convert a Bike To Electric?

Yes, it is possible to transform your regular bike into an electric bike with the help of a conversion kit. The cost of the conversion kits varies, depending on the type and brand you purchase.

If you have been riding since you were a teenager, you are probably into the latest bike tech but if you are not, there is no need to worry. It is easy to convert a bike to electric. The article will guide you step by step, making it easy for you to set up your electric bike.

Here we’ll talk about what a conversion kit is, why you should install one, the available types, and finally, how you can do it. Let’s get started!

What is an Electric Bike Conversion Kit?

An electric conversion kit will give your bike extra motor power to help you peddle less and reach your destination faster. The battery is small and can easily fit on your bike, but the more powerful it is, the heavier it will be.

Installing an electric motor and battery will not transform your regular bike into a mini-powered motorbike. There will be no ignition, no fuel costs, or any other motorbike parts.

For the motor to work, you need to pedal. While you pedal, the motor engages and gives you an extra boost to make it much easier. You can cover long distances quickly and easily ride a bike on a hill without putting in as much effort as you usually would.

These motors have an average top speed of around 15 miles per hour, depending on the e-bike kit. The range of an electric bike can vary considerably from one model to the next but it’s not uncommon to go 20-40 miles from a single charge with higher-powered models being able to go further than this.

Why are E-Bike Conversion Kits Expensive?

It is expensive because the kit comes with a motor, other electronic accessories, and a battery. It is giving your regular bike a power boost, so naturally, it will be pricey.

However, conversion kits are cheaper compared to purchasing an e-bike. Many bikers opt to convert their regular bike with a conversion kit because of the benefits.

It’s a more affordable way of getting the power you want and it’s also more flexible. You can install these kits on your old favorite bike or any other bike that you want.

Types of Conversion Kits

Here we’ll look at the different types of conversion kits available. It is essential to know the different sorts of kits you should buy for your bike, especially if you are a newbie.

Luckily, there are only two main types of e-bike conversion kits you should know. They are mid-drive motors and hub drive motors, with hub drive motors being split into front and rear hubs. We’ll explain all about them below.

Hub Drive Motors

As the name suggests, the hub drive motors are assembled on the hub of the wheel. There are two types of hub drive motors you can add to your bike which are a front and rear hub.

The front and rear hub motors operate the same way. The difference comes from the placement and the impact this arrangement has on the bike. It’s sort of like a vehicle being either front or rear-wheel drive.

It may be challenging to wrap your head around the different types of motors. Believe me, because I have been there. When I first read about the conversion kit types, I was confused about how these hubs worked, the differences, and which one is the best.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t worry, I am going to talk about each of the hubs and try to break it down, helping you understand and make the right choice.

Both the front and rear hubs have their advantages and disadvantages.

Front Hub

Installed on the front wheels of a bike, the front hub creates a pulling sensation. Since the motor is on the front wheel and the battery is placed in the center or near the rear, it offers better weight distribution. What weight distribution means here is that the bike is well balanced, without the fear of popping a wheelie.

Unfortunately, the front hub may have some handling problems. Whenever you steer your bike, you would have to steer the heavy motor as well and this may prove to be uncomfortable on long trips. You would need to be in complete control all the time.

Front hubs are easy to install and maintain and are inexpensive. Many people state that this feels less natural due to that pulling sensation and therefore can take a little while to get used to.

Rear Hub

Rear hub motors are installed at the rear of the bike. It is a bit challenging to assemble it on the first try, especially if you don’t have any experience. Another downside to the rear hub is the weight distribution. Since the motor and battery are both located at the rear, the weight is not equally divided.

You must learn to balance yourself on the bike and prevent unwanted wheelies. Fortunately, this problem can be addressed by placing the battery in the center or adjusting it towards the front.

You also do not need to worry about control. It has more push power when compared to the front hub motor. This push power makes it feel more natural as it’s a very similar feel to riding a normal bike.

Mid Drive Motors

With this type, the motor is installed in the middle, connected to the bike’s pedaling system. All the sensors are located in one place, giving a natural feel when riding the bike.

You don’t have to worry about balance because the motor is located at the center, directly below you, which is perfect.

A mid-drive hub is a premium option for bikers who are looking not only for some extra riding help but want to upgrade their bike to the next level.

How to Install a Hub Drive Conversion Kit?

The installation setup may vary depending on the kit that you have purchased. However, a kit usually includes the following parts:

  1. Pedal sensor
  2. Brake handles
  3. Thumb throttle
  4. Motorized wheel
  5. Life cycle assessment (LCA) meter
  6. Controller
  7. Cables

Some kits may not include a battery and must be purchased separately. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Disassemble the wheel. Firstly, remove the brake disk and then take the tire off. You need to release the air from the tire and remove it from the rim. When the brake disk and tire are removed you are left with the rim only. We don’t need that because we will be using the motorized wheel. Mount the tire onto the wheel and fill it with air. Once done, install the brake disk and attach the motorized front wheel to your bike.
  2. Install the battery in the middle or near the rear for perfect balance. If applicable, remove the bottle mount and add your battery. You need to disassemble the battery first. Remove the base and screw it on your bike. Then attach the battery onto the base, making sure it is locked in place.
  3. Replace the regular brake handles with the ones included in the kit, attach the brake string cables and add the thumb throttle.
  4. The next part is to install the LCA meter in the middle of the bike handle.
  5. Now you have to install the pedal sensor. It is to track how fast you are riding. Make sure the pedals are rotating freely, and the sensor must be stationary.
  6. The last part is to make the connections with the controller. Find the right place to mount the controller and connect the battery, brake, and throttle cords to the controller.

How to Install a Mid Drive Conversion Kit?

The parts included in the mid-drive are the same as the hub drive with a few additional components.

  1. Chain ring
  2. A pair of cranks

These are the steps you need to follow:

  1. The first step is to assemble the motor. Screw the chain ring with the motor, and the bolts are properly secured.
  2. Now, remove the chainring, cranks, and pedals from the bike.
  3. After that, remove the front derailleur.
  4. Insert the motor where the bike’s regular pedaling system was and screw it in place.
  5. The next step is to install the cranks and the pedals on the left and right sides.
  6. Adjust the chain on the chainring.
  7. Remove the handle and add the LCA, install the throttle and brake levers.
  8. Install the sensor on the rear wheel of the bike.
  9. For the battery installation, you need to attach the base first and then lock the battery in place.

Why Should You Convert a Regular Bike into an Electric Bike?

E-bike conversion kits are a great idea, especially for those who can’t afford an electric bike. You will be saving money and upgrading your bike at the same time.

While they are a great idea, they are still quite expensive and can be tricky to install, especially if you’re not used to repairing and working on bikes. Hopefully, now you have all the information you need to know if a conversion kit is right for you.
